Hello Everyone!
Firstly, thanks to all those brave souls that have been downloading the Page Blocks plugin… it seems that the number has surpassed the 160 mark, so many thanks for your vote of confidence! More importantly though I would like to thank Jennae Petersen, Extrakun, and Jennifer Hampton who all pointed out a minor oversight on my part that prevents the plugin from working.
One thing I didn’t take into account when uploading the plugin was that WordPress.org names the plugin’s directory page-blocks instead of page_blocks when packaging the plugin’s files into a ZIP file, which once the plugin is installed prevents the required CSS stylesheet and javascript from being found and hence working.
The plugin code has now been patched to correct this issue, so if you have already installed version 1.0 and wondered why the plugin wouldn’t work, all you need to do to fix this is upgrade to version 1.0.1 by either:
- Automatically upgrading from the admin backend. Note that depending on how long ago you installed the plugin it could take up to 12 hours for the notification message to appear.
- Download the latest version from the WordPress Plugin Directory and install it yourself manually. If you do this you only need to extract the files from the ZIP file and overwrite the page-blocks directory contents without de-activating the plugin first.
However you use or whatever you think about the plugin, I certainly look forward to reading all about it, so please feel free to contact me using the Contact Us form on the plugin’s website.
Regards,
Paolo Ermani

Looks great – works “as advertised”
Suggestion: Add trailing slash in CSS link metatag to validate, as many themes are currently using xHTML doctypes.
Or is there a way to force how the CSS link meta gets pushed into the head?
thanks!

Tried to activate the plugin and this is what came up “Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.”

Still does not appear to work with WordPress v2.7.1 !
Give fatal error, and then can only be deactivated by deleting from plugin folder!

Thanks Kel, ival, and Steve for your comments… I’ve replied to them below:
Kel:
Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll put that one in with the next release.
ival and Steve:
This has just been pointed out to me by another user, and it turns out that there is one PHP function I use which is only available in v5.x.
There will be a number of fixes to be released soon and I’ll make sure that one is included.

Hello. First, I’d like to thank you for the Page Blocks plugin. I have tested it on my wife’s site, howtosayiloveyou.net (that will be launched soon), and I believe the page blocks will be very useful.
I know that you are working on a future version that will hopefully provide a little more flexibility. One thing that I noticed was that I have not been able to add any page blocks to the Home page.
If the blocks could be added to the Home page, then it would essentially give the Home page more of a static content feel which would probably be very handy for a lot of people. It would provide a unique static area (other than the sidebar which is a little less flexible) which could possibly make the web site’s primary gateway appear more like a web site, and less like a blog, which some users of Wordpress absolutely desire.
Just my two cents.
Thanks for the plugin. It has worked on two of the sites that I have tested it on in WP 2.7.1 without a hitch.

Hi there,
Firstly – this looks like a great plugin so thank you.
Might I ask why there is a limit on the number of blocks you can add to a page?
This one is a big ask, but in future it would be great to be able to nest blocks (for styling purposes). e.g. a 3 block teaser should be held in a tease container.

hey – this is a great plugin!
but i too am getting the fatal error message when i try to use on a site hosted with GoDaddy. it works locally, but not on this server : everthing shows up (widgets and boxes to check in Page edit mode), but when you go to save the page after selecting boxes, they are not taken into account.
also, definitely agree with Phillip about being able to use them on the Home page, ie index.php – that would be great !
thnx,
-jennyb
